I don’t have any experience with Alcoholics Anonymous myself, thankfully, but I have known a few people who have used their program to get their life back together. I know a few people who could use it right now, but I guess it will be up to them to decide when it is time to turn their lives around. I’m not saying alcohol should be illegal by any means, but I think there should be a better way to keep an eye on things than with sobriety tests. Once someone is in a car, it is too late.

Just because you aren’t ready to talk to your friends and family about it, doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it. That’s why it’s called Alcoholics Anonymous. I majored in psychology when I was in college and took a number of courses in the subject, but the one that always stands out to me the most, and the one that has best served me over the years, was Abnormal Psychology.

It was a class devoted specifically to the study of psychological disorders and psychoses and was absolutely fascinating. Abnormal psychology not only taught me about such things as depression, anti-social personality disorder and schizophrenia, but it also showed me how to recognize possible symptoms of psychological disorders in other people.

I took the class in my junior year as it was required for my degree, and I immediately became enthralled by the course. Abnormal psychology was so interesting, in fact, that I would often neglect my studies in other classes because I was spending all of my time reading and researching the material in that class.

One of the things that I found most interesting was the number of people who were in the course that were not psychology majors. Several members of the class were English, education and even music majors, but had just thought that the class sounded like it would fun and opted to enroll in it as an elective.

I met up with one of those friends a few years ago at a local bar and grill, and we talked about the course 10 years after we had graduated and moved on with our lives. She was now a band director for a middle school, but said she was always thankful that she had taken that class because it allowed her to recognize psychological problems that some of her students, and even some of their parents, were having.

I think what I found so appealing about abnormal psychology was that it is really the crux of what psychologists do. It taught me why people who suffer from mental health disorders have the problems they do, whether it is a chemical imbalance and need need for medical treatment, or a behavioral disorder, and can be addressed with behavior modification and therapy.

I remember speaking to the professor of the class about how much I enjoyed the course and how fascinating it was to me, and he confessed that out of all of the classes he taught, abnormal psychology was his favorite as well. He said that he had seen more students have that moment of confirmation that they had chosen the right major in that class than in any other he had ever taught.

For me, the abnormal psychology class is one that I still look back on as the course that made me realize had had selected the right course of study. It taught me more about the field of psychology than any other class, and I will still go back and read from the courses’ textbook from time to time.

Iowa State University has an online survey about how much people know about eastern Iowa tourism that they are asking all of their students to take part in. The psychology department is then going to follow these students movements over the holiday breaks and the summer break. They are attempting to prove that a high percentage of students who have only read questions about the area are going to be stimulated enough to actually go see some of the things they didn’t even know was there. The reason they chose the eastern side of the state is so that it had to be a planned trip, not just a spur of the moment thing. Most of the questions were about attractions that are a three hour car trip from the Ames area. Some students will travel through the area on their way to and from their homes and it is expected that at least seven percent will have had their curiosity piqued enough to stop and check out at least one attraction as they are driving by. Most attractions that were in the survey were chosen because they would be of interest to people in the eighteen to twenty four old age group.

In the movie “Altered States” (starring a young William Hurt in his film debut as a psycho-physiologist who explores altered consciousness), the plot takes you through a physical and hallucinatory journey through the history of human evolution. It’s based on the immersion-tank experiments of Dr. John Lilly in the 1970s.

I found the movie fascinating! And I’m still fascinated about the subject of altered states.

A person can reach an altered state of consciousness accidentally through, for example, fever, sleep deprivation, starvation, oxygen deprivation, etc.

Altered states can also be induced through the use of sensory deprivation, an isolation tank or hypnosis, meditation or similar practices. Additionally, they can be reached by using psychoactive drugs such as alcohol and opiates, or psychoactive plants and chemicals such as LSD, peyote, marijuana, mescaline, Salvia divinorum, psychedelic mushrooms and a variety of other substances.
